PROJECT X DESIGNS Submariner Ceramic STEALTH MK III & MK IV

By TLex Project X Designs have just unveiled their latest creations; two limited edition Rolex Submariners. The Ceramic STEALTH MK III & MK IV take their inspiration from the Royal Marines SBS (Special Boat Service). The case backs of the two ‘STEALTH’ series watches carry what Project X Designs call: ‘a variation on the legendary SBS ‘Frog, Paddle and Parachute’ insignia and motto ‘By Strength & Guile’, the SBS’s current motto, not the motto of the unofficial winged parachuting frog insignia ‘Not By Strength By Guile’ that the squadron of the 70s and 80s wore, who were in fact supplied with Rolex Milsubs as well as Omega Seamaster 300s.

Somehow I don’t think the MOD’s watch budget these days will stretch to the price tags that these two custom Subs carry; though, I don’t see why not, when you consider the US Navy SEALs are now supplied with Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressors divers! OK, back on topic . . .

In fact the SBS, who were formed in July 1940 by Commando officer, Roger Courtney, some 12 months prior to the inception of the SAS (Special Air Service), were supplied with military issue Rolex Submariners from as far back as the 1950s. No Milsub could be more iconic than that of Ian Fleming’s fictional character, James Bond, who was a former SBS Operative himself. The Milsub as worn by Sean Connery in the Bond movies, Dr. No and Goldfinger displayed such sort after characteristics as its classic unguarded crown and clean dial, which Project X Designs have paid homage to with the Submariner MK III. They have also seen fit to adapt the Cyclops. The MKIII utilizes the new larger Submariner case, but with a stealthy satin finish.

The MK IV, which is intended for night maneuvers, has an even stealthier Matt Black Carbon coated case. Of the features peculiar to both models, are Project X Designs Black-Out Bezels and reed green ‘STEALTH’ inscribed Maxi Dials. Both watches are presented on reed green G10 NATO straps via Military style fixed bars to complete their military look. The MK III is being offered for £8’750, and the MK IV £9,950. They are limited to 28 pieces of each and will be available from late March to early April.
